The reasons why we do and don't do things are different than the reasons we should and shoudn't do things. For example, there are moral and ethical reasons why we shouldn't be racist, but I bet the reason we are less racist than before has to do with more uninteresting reasons, such as expediency, unintended consequences of history, and luck.
