There are many species with high-risk, high-reward mating, particularly any species with an alpha male mating pattern. Those alpha sea lions, for example, go to extraordinary lengths to secure value (see: Value), including forming coalitions and unseating other alphas, all of which are secondary to survival and reproduction. Likewise, humans go to extraordinary lengths, including evincing unique talents and making large sums of money to secure access to the best mates.
