Two thoughts on my trip to the SF Bay Area last weekend

  1. I was afraid I'd visit and then get the itch to move back. I did not. The Bay Area is still very much about acquiring and maintaining wealth. Quality-of-life is hampered by how crowded it is, and how much demand there is for so few resources. I stand by my current line, that it'd be really fun to move back, but only if I could replicate my lifestyle in Austin.

  2. On returning back to Austin, there is a sense that Austin isn't my permanent home. And strangely, without conducting a survey, it also doesn't feel like the permanent home of my friends. Perhaps it's because I only have one native Austinite as a friend, but even he wants to move out. A friend of mine said that for her, it's because the specter of greater Texas still looms large in the back of her mind.
