What are the odds I can change the odds?

I'm always curious about situations where an awareness of the odds of something happening affects the odds of that same thing happening. Is there an equilibrium where it settles on? Does it make the case for having faith, so as to make your own odds?

I once tried to calculate my odds of success on something. But then I also tried to calculate the odds that I could change my odds of success. But then I thought, shouldn't that be included in the original odds of success?

I once tried to snap myself out of a project, "Phil, the odds that you will succeed on this project are 1-to-10," but then I resisted and said, "But I can change those odds!"
